Karl is the Director for the Centre for Waste Management at UCLan. His background ranges from engineering to environmental management. He has seen his career evolve from heavy industry (iron and steel) into environmental solutions for waste resource recovery and treatment.
Over recent years, he has become involved in the food sector. As a Chartered Waste Manager, he has extensive knowledge of the technical, legislative and financial implications of converting waste into valuable resources. He has been a Charted Engineer for over 20 years and has been involved in developing bespoke solutions for a range of waste streams.
His research interests include: life cycle assessment of products and processes; environmental impacts of technology; barriers to waste management and social attitudes to waste and resource management. He is also the programme leader for the MSc in Waste and Resource Management and has developed a number of bespoke programmes for the food processing industry.
